City of Murrieta Issues Emergency Declaration to Manage COVID-19

In response to California Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement that all California residents are to stay at home for all but essential tasks in order to maintain social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID 19, Murrieta City Manager Kim Summers signed an Emergency Declaration this evening, March 19, 2020.

The proclamation of a local emergency does not signify an increased risk to the residents of Murrieta. A proclamation of a local emergency allows the City Manager additional flexibility to acquire resources; manage essential City staff, provide or receive mutual aid from other jurisdictions and assists in securing State and Federal Disaster funds.

"Our City team is working around the clock to respond to the unfolding circumstances related to slowing the spread of this pandemic, provide information to our concerned citizens and businesses regarding the provision of public services and the protection of our most vulnerable residents" said Summers. "This proclamation, which cities across the nation are issuing, is an important administrative step required to accomplish the City's mission to reduce the risk of exposure."

Although City facilities are closed to the public to protect our employees and citizens, there is a wide variety of virtual services available. All critical City services will continue, including Police, Fire, and Dispatch services. City staff will continue to function either via telecommuting or at physical locations. We ask that all residents and businesses abide by the Governors Order, which is attached, and can be found on the City's website at Maintaining six feet between each other, hand washing, and staying home unless it is essential.

Early next week the Murrieta City Council will hold a virtual meeting to ratify the Emergency Declaration. Visit the City's website calendar for more information on how to participate virtually. California Governor Newsom proclaimed a statewide emergency on March 4, 2020, Riverside County proclaimed a public health emergency on March 8, 2020, and President Trump declared a national emergency on March 13, 2020.

In collaboration with federal and state agencies, the Riverside County Department of Public Health is the lead agency managing response to local novel coronavirus testing, investigations, coordination with health providers, and public information.
